How to copy a ChatGPT or Claude answer as Markdown

Use the copy button under the answer, not a mouse selection. Then paste into a place that takes plain text, such as a code editor or a Markdown reader. If you see #, ** and - in the result, you have the Markdown.

Why the same copy pastes differently

When you copy, the clipboard can hold the same text in more than one form at once: plain text, and formatted text (HTML). The app you paste into picks the form it prefers.

  • A code editor or plain text field takes the plain text.
  • Google Docs, Word and email take the formatted text, so you get headings and bold rather than symbols.

So the copy may be fine, and the paste is where it changes. That is also why selecting part of an answer with the mouse gives a different result: a selection copies what is on screen, with the Markdown symbols already turned into formatting.

If the paste looks like the left side, it is Markdown. If it looks like the right side with no symbols at all, it is formatted text or a plain selection.

Ways that give you the Markdown

  • The answer's copy button. In the main chat apps this is the most reliable way to get the whole answer with its Markdown. Their behavior is not documented and changes from time to time, so check the paste once.
  • Ask for a code block. Ask for the answer "in Markdown, inside one code block". The code block shows the source, and its own copy button copies it exactly as written.
  • Claude Code. The /copy command copies the last response as Markdown. /copy 2 copies the one before it.
  • Gemini. Share and export, then Export to Docs, sends an answer to a new Google Doc as formatted text rather than Markdown.

When you copied formatted text by mistake

You do not have to go back. Paste it into MarkdownPaper: it shows the plain text first, and when the clipboard also carried formatting it offers Convert the formatting, which turns headings, lists, links, tables and code back into Markdown.

When you want formatting, not Markdown

For a Google Doc, Word or an email, the formatted version is what you want. Paste the Markdown into a reader first, then copy the page from there. The guide to copying Markdown into Google Docs covers it step by step.

Common problems

  • The table arrives as one line. It was pasted as plain text into an app that expects formatting. Paste into a Markdown reader first.
  • Math shows as $x^2$ or \(x^2\). Chat apps write math in LaTeX. A reader with math support, such as MarkdownPaper, draws it.
  • Code lost its indentation. It was copied from the page, not with the copy button. Use the button on the code block.
