What the converter produces
The output is GitHub Flavored Markdown turned into plain, semantic HTML, with no class names of ours and no inline styles, so it takes on the look of whatever page you put it in.
| Markdown | HTML |
|---|---|
# Title | <h1 id="title">Title</h1> |
**bold** and _italic_ | <strong> and <em> |
[text](https://example.com) | <a href="https://example.com"> |
| A table with colons in its delimiter row | <table> with align on each cell |
- [x] Done | A disabled, checked <input type="checkbox"> |
A fenced code block marked js | <pre><code class="language-js"> |
A footnote [^1] | A linked and a footnotes section |
Headings get an id so a link to #title works. HTML written inside the
Markdown, such as <details> or <kbd>, is kept. Anything that could run in
the page, a <script>, an inline onclick or a javascript: link, is
removed, using the same rules the MarkdownPaper reader applies to every
document.
Code, preview and a file
The HTML tab is the markup to copy. The Preview tab is that same markup set as
a page, so what you see is exactly what you copy. Download gives you a
complete .html document with a title taken from your first heading, which
opens on its own in any browser.
The file is deliberately unstyled. For a typeset page with fonts, highlighted code, math and diagrams carried inside one self contained file, open the document in the reader and choose Save as an HTML file from the share menu. Markdown to HTML explains the difference and the command line tools that convert many files at once.
Questions
Is the Markdown to HTML converter free?
Yes. It needs no account and has no limits beyond what your browser can hold.
Is my Markdown uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs in this tab with the same code the reader uses, and nothing is sent to a server.
Does it support GitHub Flavored Markdown?
Yes: tables, task lists, strikethrough, autolinks and footnotes all convert, as do headings with ids and fenced code blocks with their language.
Can I convert HTML back to Markdown?
Yes, with the HTML to Markdown converter, which also reads formatting pasted from Word and Google Docs.
