Paste formatting, not just markup
When you copy from a document or a web page, the clipboard carries the formatting as HTML beside the plain text. The converter reads that HTML, so a heading arrives as a heading and a bulleted list as a list, rather than one unbroken paragraph. The field shows the HTML it read, and you can edit it and watch the Markdown change.
It knows the quirks of the usual sources. A Google Docs selection comes wrapped in one bold tag that does not mean bold, and Word sends a stylesheet and its own markup with every copy. Both are read for what they mean and the rest is left out.
What the Markdown looks like
The output is the Markdown a person would write by hand:
| HTML | Markdown |
|---|---|
<h2>Install</h2> | ## Install |
<strong>, <em> | **bold**, _italic_ |
<a href="…"> | [text](…) |
<ul>, <ol> | - and 1. lists |
<table> | A GitHub Flavored Markdown table |
<pre><code> | A fenced code block |
<blockquote> | > quotes |
Scripts, frames and inline event handlers are dropped before anything is converted, the same rules the reader applies to a paste. Styling that Markdown has no way to say, such as a font colour, is left behind; the text formatting guide covers what Markdown can express.
Questions
How do I convert a Word document to Markdown?
Open the document in Word, select the text, copy it, and paste it into the field above. Headings, bold and italic, lists, links and tables come across. Images in a Word document are not carried by a copy, so add them afterwards.
How do I convert Google Docs to Markdown?
Select the text in Google Docs, copy it, and paste it into the field above. The converter removes the wrapper Google Docs puts around every copy, so only the text that is really bold comes out bold.
Is the converter free and private?
Yes. It is free, needs no account, and the conversion happens in this tab without sending your document anywhere.
Can I go the other way?
Yes. The Markdown to HTML converter turns Markdown into clean HTML, and Markdown to PDF prints it as a document.
