Common questions

How do I make MarkdownPaper open .md files by default?

The quickest way is from the app itself: with no document open, or at the foot of the library, choose "Open Markdown files with MarkdownPaper by default". On a Mac, macOS asks you to confirm. On Windows, it opens Default apps in Settings for you to choose.

To do it by hand on a Mac, select any .md file in Finder and press Command-I. Under "Open with", choose MarkdownPaper, then click "Change All".

On Windows, right-click any .md file, choose "Open with", then "Choose another app". Select MarkdownPaper, tick "Always use this app to open .md files", and click OK. You can also go to Settings, Apps, Default apps, search for .md, and pick MarkdownPaper there.

Every Markdown file then opens in MarkdownPaper with a double click.

How do I open a file with MarkdownPaper without changing my default?

Right-click the file and choose "Open With" on a Mac, or "Open with" on Windows, then MarkdownPaper. It is listed there as soon as the app is installed.

How do I install it on another Mac?

Sign in to the Mac App Store with the same Apple Account you bought it with, open your account page, and download MarkdownPaper from your purchases. There is no second charge.

How do I get a refund?

Refunds are handled by the store you bought from. For the Mac App Store, request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.

A file changed, but the page did not update. Why?

The desktop app follows changes to the file you are reading, but not while you are editing it, so your own typing is never replaced by another program's version. Your edits are saved to the file instead. Once you leave edit mode, the page follows outside changes again.

A document in my library shows an older version. Why?

If the original file was moved, renamed or deleted, the app shows its own saved copy instead. Open the file again from its new place.

What does it need to run?

The Mac app runs on macOS 10.15 or later, on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. The Windows app runs on Windows 10 or Windows 11. The web reader works in any current browser. See the desktop page for current store availability.

Does it work offline?

Yes. The desktop app never needs a connection. The web reader works offline once it has been opened, and can be installed from your browser.

Where are my documents stored?

On your device only. The web reader keeps its library in your browser's storage, and the desktop app keeps it in its own folder on your computer. The original files stay where they are. See the privacy policy.
