What stays and what goes
Plain text cannot show bold or a heading, but it can keep the shape a reader needs, so the converter keeps that and removes the rest:
| Markdown | In the plain text |
|---|---|
**bold**, _italic_, ~~struck~~ | The words alone |
# Heading | The heading on its own line |
- item and 1. item | A dash or a number, indented by depth |
- [x] task | [x] or [ ] before the task |
[words](https://example.com) | words (https://example.com), or the words alone |
| A table | Rows of cells separated by tabs |
| A code block | The code exactly, every space kept |
> quote | The quoted words |
> [!NOTE] | Note: before the text |
[^1] footnotes | [1] in the text, the notes listed at the end |
 | The image's description |
A line break inside a paragraph in the Markdown source is a space in the text, so each paragraph becomes one line that wraps wherever you paste it. Raw HTML keeps its words and loses its tags. Frontmatter at the top of the file is left out, and prices such as "$5 and $10" stay prices rather than being read as mathematics.
Links: keep the address or drop it
With Keep link addresses on, a link keeps its address in brackets after its words, so nothing is lost in an email or a text message. Turn it off for clean prose, such as text going into a form, a spreadsheet cell or a speech reader. An address that only means something inside the document, like a link to a heading or a relative file path, is always left out.
Where plain text is the right format
Plain text is for places that take no formatting at all: a commit message, a form field, an SMS, a ticket system, or a model's prompt where the symbols only add noise. For an email or a document that does take formatting, the Markdown to rich text converter keeps the headings, bold and tables instead. To see the Markdown as a finished page, open it in the online Markdown viewer.
Questions
How do I remove Markdown formatting from text?
Paste the Markdown into the field above. The plain text appears beside it,
with the symbols removed and the paragraphs, lists and tables kept. Copy it
or download it as a .txt file.
Does it keep tables?
Yes. Each row becomes a line with its cells separated by tabs, which reads as columns and pastes into a spreadsheet as cells.
Is my text uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in this tab, and nothing you paste leaves your browser.
