What comes across

The converter reads the document's structure rather than its look, so what Word means is what arrives:

In WordIn the Markdown
Heading 1 to Heading 6 styles# to ###### headings
Bold, italic and strikethrough**bold**, _italic_, ~~struck~~
Bulleted and numbered lists, nested- and 1. lists, indented
TablesTables, the header row first
Links[words](address)
Footnotes[^1] references and their notes
A Code style, or Consolas textCode blocks and inline code
Quote styles> quotes
Checked and empty boxes- [x] and - [ ] tasks

Headings come across only when the document uses Word's Heading styles. Text that was merely made large and bold looks like a heading in Word but is a paragraph to the converter, so check the first few headings once.

Images

A Word file carries its pictures inside it. Left in, they become data addresses in the Markdown, often tens of kilobytes each, so they are left out by default and the page says how many there were. Tick Keep images to include them; the Markdown is then self contained but long.

Everything is checked on the way: the converter uses the same rules the MarkdownPaper reader applies to a paste, so a document you were sent cannot write a script or an unsafe link into the Markdown.

From other places

Text copied from Word, Google Docs or a web page can be pasted into the HTML to Markdown converter instead of saving a file first. Going the other way, the Markdown to Word converter writes a .docx from Markdown. To read the result as a finished page, open it in the online Markdown viewer.

Questions

How do I convert a Word document to Markdown?

Choose Open .docx above and pick the file, or drop it on the document pane. The Markdown appears on the right; copy it or download it as a .md file.

Does it work with .doc files?

Only .docx. An older .doc file opens in Word, Pages or LibreOffice; save it as .docx there and choose it again.

Is my document uploaded?

No. The file is read in this browser tab, and nothing is sent to a server.
